As always, catalogues are a good place to obtain free information, as are the manuals and www sites of the manufacturer of the instruments you use.
If you want a general view and guidance, I found an early edition of the following book very useful to have around.
A practical guide to the care, maintenance and troubleshooting of capillary gas chromatographic systems
By Dean Rood
4th Edition, 2007
Published by Wiley-VCH
ISBN 3527313737, 9783527313730
There are specialist books ( which tend to cost more ) , on components and theory, but for a general hands-on text for novices, the above is useful if you want to spend some money, rather than hunt around the WWW, manuals, and catalogues..
Please keep having fun,
