What is the difference between single quad vs. triple quad mass analyzer?

Single quad is single quad. Triple quad is 3 quad set Q1, Q2 and Q3, in which Q2 is in fact a CID, only Q1 & Q3 are mass filters.

Hello; What thohry says is correct; but I want to add somthing else.
Usually what we call Triple quads or Tandem systems is not alway three quad puted togeter; so instead to have a quad as collition cell some companies are using other "diveces as T-wave or Hexapoles for this.

The diference betwen single quads antr "triple" quads is:

Single Quad; you ionize your molecule and then you can filter or select one m/Z ration using your quadrupole; and then detect it. or get all the fragmentation spectra with out filtering elting pass all the aion to the detector

Triple Quad:
1) you ionize and use only your first quad.
2) You ainoze, and filter one m/z ion in yor first quad and fragment it again in the "second" quad and obtein a new fragmentation spectra from an ion.
3)You ainoze, and filter one m/z ion in yor first quad and fragment it again in the "second" quad Then you select a new m/Z in your thrid Quad.

try doing a Google search for mass spec and "precursor ion scanning" and "neutral loss"; these are two very interesting ways to use a triple quad that have been around for a very long time. Also try looking up "MRM" methods, which need a triple quad.

Also, triple quads are typically much more sensitive than single quads due to their capability of doing MRM scans, etc.
