Help with Agilent Macros

I'm trying to use the macro language to customize reports on an Agilent GC/MS 6890/5973N(Chemstation). I am somewhat familiar with programming(know some basic and a fair bit of Java), and I'm having trouble finding documentation for the Agilent macros that came with Chemstation. Does anyone know a good place to find documentation? Also, any advice anyone can offer in working with the macro language would be appreciated.

I don't know anything about macros - but did modify two somehow which work on at least 5971 and 5972 Chemstations years ago - for sure couldn't do now what I did then, not so computer-literate. But maybe we can get something where we share macros?

I also have an old Macro Programming Guide from HP, copyright 1995, 450 pages. If this is newer than the same one listed earlier, I can send it.

Also, check your ChemStation CD. In many versions there is a "user contributed library" which is a collection of contributions from users. The quality may vary, but it may get you started. Finding the files is often the most difficult. Often they are in a directory named "ucl."

The macro manual I have is edition 10/2003. As far as I know there are no newer versions. Agilent prefers to write the macros for you (for a fee).

Anyway, still works. I used last year to modify some macros. Yes, there is a user-contributed macros in the cd (it is online too). But, these macros are old and some commands may not work. Ex.: I tried to introduce a button on Chemstation to run my macros and didn’t work, but I was able to introduce my own menu in the menu bar.

Also, some of the macro/commands call upon other macros (you don’t have access to them). The Data Browser installs these macros and no error is raised if they are not present (you just don’t get your results). So, make sure you have Data Browser installed.

I notice in your original posting that you are using MSD. I presume then that you are using the MSD ChemStation and not the GC ChemStation. There are differences between the two macro languages that a macro written on the GC ChemStation will not run on the MSD ChemStation without some changes, so you need to be aware of this. You need to check if the offfers of the macro manual are for GC/LC ChemStation or MSD Chemstation.

Consumer products guy, what type of macros did you have in mind? I have not done much other than customized reporting so far with macros.

I had changed one macro so that printing a searched spectrum would produce a single page with TIC on top, then the unknown spectum middle, and the selected library spectrum at the bottom. For me, that was most useful.

A second modification was on an automated library search to replace the CAS number with our Retention Index number from out libraries, more useful to us. These work on our Win3x/5971 system and Win95/5972 system, haven't tried on our newer 5973/5975 systems.

So I was wondering if others here had developed anything interesting.
