Hi, are standard detector cells in hplc, just normal uv detector with variable wavelength

It depends upon what you buy and what you application is. I would guess that diode arrarys would be more common than a VWD simply because a diode array is slightly more sensitive (or so I think) and have the ability to collect entire spectra as opposed to a single point .... but again, it depends upon the end user's application.
