For GC we need water with low organics, while conductivity and sterility are of lesser concern, but all the laboratory water purifiers that I have come across reduce conductivity and microbial loads as well as TOC, and cost a stack of money. Is there anything out there that takes of organics and does not cost the Earth. What happens if you just put tap or distilled water through an activated carbon cartridge (which is the only part of the commercial systems that does anything to TOC) ?

Your propasal sounds reasonable. Might want to place a call to manufacturer just to see if they've already tried it. May be how they check lot integrity.

I have no idea what your usage amounts are, but what about using HPLC grade water that you purchase from someone.

Back in my days of running TOCs, I also remember there being TOC grade water that was not terribly expensive as well.
