Hi Folks,

I am currently using acrodisc 4 mm, 0.45 Nylon membrane filter for my samples prior to HPLC injection. I am just wondering if anyone can recommend another type of filter that would be robust enough for wide range of samples for HPLC preparation and relatively cost effective?

Are you looking for a less expensive filter? If so, there are some out there, but the nylon acrodisc is a good unit as far as I am concerned. I like the PTFE ones as well. As far as I am concerned, using a good filter is much cheaper than clogging injectors and columns.

One thing I have done in the past is scan Evilbay for folks selling off the contents of labs. Two years ago, I purchased 2700 0.45 micron 13 mm nylon acrodisc filters for about $800, all in their original wrapping. The seller had been auctioning cases off piecemeal, but I bought his entire lot and everyone was happy. Just a thought...

I have routinely used PVDF or PTFE 13mm (0.45 um) filters for sample cleanup. in larger quantities (packs of 1000, non-sterile) we can get for $885.00.

Nylon filters are the same price.
Ditto to comments of others. Also,...

Not all filters are created equal! Cheaper filters may have extractables that leach into your solvent. Doesn't always happen, but is a known risk.

Different filter types can sorb analytes out of your solution when you filter it. For examples, see Carlson et al., J. Chrom. Sci., 38, 77 (2000).

Filtering mostly aqueous solutions through teflon is not fun.

If you are using a smaller particle column (<= 3 um), switch to 0.2 um.
