Is it possible to use the Rs-232 output of a HP 5890 bring the 24 pin down to the 9 pin input on the PC and use Peaksimple as the chromatography software? So far I have been unsuccessful, but am not sure if it is just the GC. Does the GC need to be put in some sort of ready-mode to connect? I don't have the Manual for the 5890 so I am pretty lost.

I am a recent graduate and have spent a lot of time running GCs, but have never set one up. I've just purchased an old 5890 and am trying to get this bad boy running for as cheap as possible.

Thanks.

Unless the 5890 in equiped w/ a digital output, I don't think so.
Thanks,
DR

I don't know what a RS232 is from a hole in the ground, but we had a 5890A that was hooked up directly to an HP integrator, if that helps. Our 5890 Series II were all computerized.

you will need to use one of SRI's A/D converter boxes.
this is your only way to see a chromatogram with the software.
also the software does not provide full control over other vendors instruments. it is only capable of doing remote start and stop using the TTL ports available on their A/D converter boxe.
if you don't have another software you will need to set everything manually.
if you have a 7673 sampler it will be probably be impossible to correclty control it this way

In case the 5890 is equiped with HP-IB/RS232 communication board (i.e. has the 25 pin cannon connector), it can be controled and the data acquired digitaly over the serial (RS232) line.

Of course you need an appropriate software supporting this, I am not sure if PeakSimple has such option.

You can try our Clarity with GC control module (details and list of distributors is available on our web pages www.dataapex.com
