Hi,Dose anyone know the specific characteristics of hplc that make it such an attractive method for analysis of biological samples and drug metabolites?
aery

Many of the molecules that are dealt with in biological and pharmaceutical analysis have these properties:

-water soluble at least to some extent
-not volatile
-may not be stable at the high temperatures needed for GC
-some are high molecular weight like proteins and carbohydrates

With HPLC, you can separate them by several mechanisms. The most common ones are:
-hydrophobicity and polarity
-size
-charge

Also, HPLC coupled to Mass Spec and other detectors besides UV and RI is becomming increasingly affordable.
