Thank you for the great information.A solution containing known compounds is infused into the instrument, and parameters are adjusted to bring the mass accuracy and resolution to within allowable tolerances. Mass accuracy is the difference between the measured mass of the known compound and the theoretical or calculated mass, though it can be expressed in different ways. Resolution is a function of how wide the mass peak is, usually measured at half-height, and it determines whether your instrument can tell the difference between compounds which are very close in mass. Resolution can also be expressed in different ways. The allowable tolerances for accuracy and resolution depend upon the type of mass analyzer that is being used. The adjustments involved in calibrating the instrument may be automatic (entirely performed by a computer) or manual, or a combination of the two.
