DB-5MS column for halogenated disinfection byproducts

Hi Everyone,

I'm interested in analyzing some DBPs by GC-ECD (haloacetic acids, trihalomethanes). EPA methods and others recommend using a DB-1 column, 1.0 um thickness but I currently have a DB-5MS column, 0.25 um - all other characteristics equal.

Does anyone have experience using an alternative phase column for these types of compounds? Should I adjust the method to account for difference in phase thickness?

IMHO you won't get sufficient resolution with 0.25 µm film thickness.
This really is is a case of "Don't think, try it" to slightly misquote former forum member Hans Muller.

To a first approximation your thinner film will shorten the retentions by a factor of 4 so you will probably have to lower the column temperature.
