I'm using this column at the moment with a very long gradient (0.1%TFA and MeCN) and want to use a 3um particle size to reduce the time/amount of solvent.
(Lichrospher doesn't come in smaller particles).
What would be a suitable starting C18 endcapped column to try first?

Go to Rheodyne's web site and download an evaluation version of their "Column Match" program:

That will let you select any column (out of about 300 commercial possibilities) and then show you the nine closest matches in terms of selectivity. I think the evaluation version runs for either 30 or 60 days before you have to uninstall or purchase.

We may be able to help you out. Silvertone Sciences specializes in 3µm columns (we have such low backpressures we are the only company in the world that make 250 and 500mm 3µm column lengths). Please send an information request from our site. or use the email below, and we will provide some comparison data. According to the data I have it looks as if the Lichrospher may have greater cation exchange activity due to the fact that it is a B-silica. Otherwise the hyrophobicity, hydrogen bonding, and retention appear very similar.
I will provide you with as much information as possible to help you decide if our columns are compatible.

If you are not restricted to 3um you might try Superspher 100 RP18. This is the 4um material of Merck with identical silica specifications (beside particle size) as Lichrospher.
