GC foranalysis of residual monomer

Discussions about GC and other "gas phase" separation techniques.

Hello out there!

I'd like to establisch a test method for the analysis of residual monomeres in polyacrylates?

Does anyone have an idea how to get the content of different monomeres (AA, BA, 2EHA, 2HEA, MA, VAcm IOA) in one single test method.

Thanks a lot

Chris
some of these abbreviations are unclear. Please write out the full chemical names. Thanks

Oh, I'm sorry.

The Monomers are: Acrylic Acid, Butylacrylate, 2-Ethylhexylacrylate, 2 Hydroxyethylacrylate, Methylacrylate, Vinylacetate and iso-Octylacrylate.

Bless me again
Do you have a solvent to dissolve the polyacrylate polymer so the monomers can be separated?

The R-acrylates should be separated without much problem. The 2-ethylhexyl and the 2-methylheptyl (isooctyl) ester will require a long capillary column to separate, unless the isooctyl is actually a trimethylpentyl ester.

However, the retention-time issues of free acrylic acid and the hydroxy-ethyl acrylate ester are unknown. These may require derivitization, especially the free acid.

Any more information available? Thanks.

HPLC may be a better solution.

Rod

I agree with Rod. GPC would be a much better analysis tool for polymers and monomers than GC.
