analysis of NO,CO,N2O,N2,CH4,CO2,O2

hi
for automobile exhaust which generally contains NO,CO,N2O,CH4 in ppm level N2,CO2, Aand O2 in %., which column is suitable for the analysis of these gases. is porapak Q is ok.
also what temperaure and which carrier gas is useful...as the exhaust contains lot much N2. then should He or H2 are suitable for carrier gas.

I don't think Q or a Poraplot Q capillary will split N2, O2 or CO.

Have a look at a CP CarboPlot, might be more suitable.

Is it possible to set up the GC with twin columns, perhaps Q in one side and a moly sieve in the other with column switching.

Any of the column suppliers will have a good technical help resource.
A direct question to Agilent, Varian or Restek and they'll generally point you in the right direction.

Relative times to ethane = 1.00 for the following gases on a Porapak QS @ 30°C

0.176 Nitrogen
0.213 NO
0.273 Methane
0.420 CO2
0.534 NO2

You will need a long column, perhaps a micropacked, for best resolution.

Supelco can make micropacked columns as long as 10 meters with this packing.

Take a look at the Restek ShinCarbon columns. Very good for fixed gases. The only problem might be between O2 andN2, as they are not quite baseline resolved, depending on concentrations.
