EPA 537

[Bigbear]

PFOA has been found in private wells in the south west of our state. We may be tasked with running method 537 foe water and a CDC method for blood.
I have been searching the web for a 537 standard mix to no avail.
Anyone out there know where I may find one?

Absolute Standards has three different mixes available. Part numbers are 96870, 96871, and 96872. Have you run 537s before?

OK, something to keep in mind is that most HPLC systems will exhibit ambient contamination for the perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFOA, PFHpA, PFNA, etc.). Waters sells a PFC Analysis kit to deal with this, but you can do the same thing by running a 'trap' column in between the pump and the autosampler valve. http://www.waters.com/webassets/cms/lib ... 2813en.pdf

Another thing to do is replace the lines from the mobile phase containers to the pump if they are teflon with PEEK lines. It is more difficult to work with the PEEK lines of that size because they are not as flexible but it can reduce the background PFOAs.

Where did you purchase your isotopically labeled internal standards and surrogates from? Is there a mix out there with all 6? or 3 of each? Can't seem to find them anywhere (at least at a decent price). We just purchased our LC and are starting to set up for the method. PFCs are running rampant in our corner of the state.

When I was running EPA 537, we bought our labelled standards from Wellington Labs. And no, they aren't cheap.

We're are currently trying to decide on what to do about the branch isomers as well. Anyone have any thoughts on this new subject?

Also, since the whole system is essentially PTFE free... do we need to worry about the gas regulator fittings? They are all about to get connected with Teflon on them. Thanks

There is an advisory published to the EPA PFAS webpage and the Drinking Water Analytical Methods web page that addresses the reporting of branched chain PFOA. Basically, calibrate with straight chain and add in the area of the branched.
