If your proposed analysis is similar to one that Agilent (or another vendor) has a technical note for use the conditions listed in the note as a starting point.

1. You first need to know how to run the GC. If you have nobody to train you, then look on the vendors websites for instructions and manuals.

2. When you know how to run the GC do some routine analysis with established methods so that you become familiar with it.

3. When you want to develop a new method look for application notes from any of the vendors, what works on a Thermo will work on a Bruker will work on an Agilent if you know how to run the GC (see #1).

4. If there are no application notes that are helpful, then do a search of the scientific literature. You will probably have to adapt these method slightly to get them to work optimally.
