EMPOWER: Squished fonts in report (preview and print)

At our laboratory, I've set up a Remote Desktop session with one client PC.
Everything works fine even with multiple users. The only problem is that reports and fonts in Empower and when printed are squished together.

I've found this (see page 24):

http://www.waters.com/webassets/cms/sup ... 2704rb.pdf

It could be a problem with the DPI settings of the external desktop. I've managed to change the DPI setting of this external desktop to 100%.
This does not solve the problem.

Any ideas on this one?
There is a similar topic on this one viewtopic.php?f=4&t=12006&p=59783&hilit ... wer#p59783 but the problem was not really solved.
Hi artsjeroen
  • did you check the TTF "true type fonts" one both systems? Are all fonts installed.
  • did you check the drivers (not Citrix) on the windows machines? I did have printimg issues, because the software on the laptop was the "Standard" windows driver, on the client was the driver from the printer supplier...
Best regards

We've the same issue. The level of 'squishing' varies between clients, but is always there. On some systems it is different between using preview or printing directly from the project window.

We've also contacted Waters, but have no response. Unfortunately, our IT team has removed Windows XP from the network, so no chance to have a look at Waters' workaround for the font scaling. Not sure that would help, as we aren't set to 150% anyway.

I know this is of no direct help, except to say there's other out there with the same problems.
Same problem here.

We have some workstations setup and some vms. Workstations can print and preview fine; VMs have the notorious font squished problem.

Printer drivers are the same across the physical workstation and the vm.

Fonts are not the same between the physical workstation and the vm. However, reports are using an arial font, which is the same between the workstation and the vm.

Our default view is not 150%, so the Waters tech note suggesting this as the fix does not apply.

Currently we are noticing this using Windows 7, and Empower 3 FR2.

I have also experienced this same problem on Windows XP running Empower 2 FR4. Seems like something different is going on with the vms that is causing this problem.

I would absolutely love to know how to solve it.
I have found a few tricks to fix this problem that an everyday user can try, some of which are easier and some of which are harder.

1) Go into the report editor and change all data columns of interest from "Right" to "Center" alignment.
2) Change the names of the columns to something longer which allows more room in the data cells (i.e. change Area to 2D Peak Area).
3) Save your reports to a PDF from the Preview/Publisher screen. For some reason, when it saves the report as a PDF the fonts tend to come out better.

I have spoken with Waters about this issue and they weren't able to identify a fix to the issue.
We're using Windows' Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to remotely access the workstations.
When using RDP, the resolution of the RDP client must be set to a 4:3 ratio instead of a 19:6 ratio. This solves the squished fonts problem.
Dear all,

I would like to refresh this topic. We had the same problem as artsjeroen wrote when we used the connection via RD to the workstations and we solved it by set resolution settings to 4:3 ratio as mentioned.

But now we are migrating to Enterprise solution where we have the problem again when we print the reports from fat clients. Even if we change the resolution ratio on the client to 4:3 (under these conditions were the reports made on locals) the problem persists.

When we print from Empower on the server directly, the issue is solved, but we would need also print from clients of course :).

Would you anabody know how we can solve it, please?

Thanks and regards
I've found the solution!

This hotfix for RDP fixes the resolution problem.
An other fix is to open empower in 4:3 screenratio via RDP, but with the hotfix it is possible to have a 16:9 screenratio.
