Could anyone give some insight on how to determine the surface coverage of the particles, either by experiment or by calculation? Thanks.

You need to know the surface area (usually determined by porosimetry) and the percentage carbon (standard CHN analysis).

Convert the carbon percentage to moles (use the appropriate molecular weight for your ligand) and divide by the surface area.

Thanks. That helps a lot. Is the CHN analysis the same method the column manufactures use to determine the carbon load?

Pretty much (actually, only the "C" part). Basically, burning off the organic part and measuring the resulting CO2.
