Best option if HPLC grade is not available

Hello. I was wondering what the best option is if an HPLC grade solvent is not readily available.

I am interested in injecting small amounts of octane, nonane, and decane in my column. I these chemicals on sigma aldrich labeled as analytical standards under the general heading of analytical/chromatography.

Would filtering some other grade (like reagent grade) through a .2um filter be acceptable? (I have used small filters before and it is pretty hard to push the fluid through the syringe so I was thinking I would try something else before trying this.

Just wondering if anyone had any better advice. Thanks.

your compounds are not UV active
usually grade of solvent for HPLC assumes that it has no UV active impurities
filtering thought the filter is not cleaning from anything accept particles

You can purify solvents in the lab, but I thing you are better off finding another solution

You get what you pay for. The more expensive the non-HPLC grade, the more likely it is to not interfere with your peaks. That said, this is also largely a function of what wavelength you are running at (assuming UV detection). If you're running at or below ~220nm, use the best stuff you can get (MS grade, AR grade for Mallinckrodt, Optima for Fisher etc.). If you're running at higher wavelengths, you can likely use ACS or even reagent grade and get away with it while saving some money.
