I met some problem when trying to communicate our GC 5890 Series II with UniChrom. Since I first heard of this software in this forum, hopefully I could also find people who got experience using it here.
I downloaded UniChrom version V from its homepage: http://www.unichrom.com/dle.php.
It's free and ready-to-use. Looks like a pretty promising approach for our low-budget plan.
According to the manual, I purchased the RS-232C board (19242-60030) and installed it in my GC, then connected it with the computer through an RS-232 cable (12 pin for the GC PCB and 9 pin for the computer RS232 port). On the GC front panel, I changed the mode to "HP 5890A Mode" and set up the serial port speed (baud rate) to 19,200 bps (the same rate was set up for the computer port). On the computer, I installed the driver named "HP5890" from the UniChrom driver package, and the interface window was opened successfully.
Then the problem came. When I clicked "run" button on UniChrom, a message showed up on the GC panel saying "UniChrom Control". However, UniChrom gave me an error message as follow:
Can not open Instrument "HP5890".
Possible reasons:
1. Instrument is not ON.
2. Program can not gain access to the instrument.
3. Wrong instrument configuration.
4. Temporary problems with Instrument. Please try again.
After I clicked Ok on this message, another one showed up: List index out of bounds (47) at 0x004215BD.. I have no idea what that means.
Regarding reason 1 and 4, I restarted my computer as well as the GC several times so the possibility can be excluded. It appears to me that there were some communications between the GC and the computer, but the software didn't get right signals. Could it be that the problem of my hardware (board or cable)? Or further configuration is required for the GC/software/computer?
Right now I am really at a loss, and any input would be highly appreciated!
Thanks!!
Rong
