Tandem columns vs mixed bed WAX, SCX

Is a mixed-bed SAX, SCX column, in principle, similar to using the two columns (SAX and SCX) in tandem?

The answer is yes and no.
By connecting two columns you can achieve having both SAX and WAX, but there is no sense in doing this. You get better results by using appropriate column with both functionalities on one ligand Connecting two columns mimics the earlier approach of physically mixing two silica gels. Back pressure and peak broadening due to connection can be an issue. Reproducbibility might be an issue because you introducing two columns with own variations. Packing two different supports might be challenging two unless you have experience. By the time you optimize you method you spend more time/money then just buying a column with wider range of ionization and both functions. We have few columns which can address your task.
