HPLC gradient pump checking?

How could we determine whether or not the gradient pump is generating a gradient? Is there more than one method?

I have instituted John Dolan's gradient performance checks in two different laboratories, and on many different HPLC systems. These checks are included in the article below.

... and on a related issue I am KICKING myself for specifying an LC-MS system without any UV detection, with a strong motivation behind my kicking being that I have no easy way to check its pump.

...and on another related issue I know quite a few people who by default use a conductivity detector after the UV (or fluorescence) detector to monitor the gradient (works best if there is a buffer of some sort involved).

Perhaps you could purchase an inexpensive, used detector for performance checks; e.g., gradient check, precision and linearity checks, etc.
