Column/solvent compatibility

Hi,

I have a DB-5.625 column [(5%-Phenyl)-methylpolysiloxane]
in my 6890/5973 GC/MS. Is acetonitrile compatible with this column? What about DMSO or methanol? I usually run all standards and extracts in methylene chloride, but a possible client would like their sample run in acetonitrile, if possible. I would appreciate any advice for this newbie.

There should be no problem with the solvents listed.

However, be aware that DMSO especially can have OTHER chemicals dissolved in it. Likewise, methanol may have a large amount of water. The unknowns and the water can be damaging to the column phase and surface.

I've only noticed problems with acetic/basic materials. I would say mix a small amount with a solvent you normally use, inject it and see if you get a good peak from it. If the peak is good then you should be fine.
