DB-624 column can use in water analysis.

Discussions about GC and other "gas phase" separation techniques.

Hi,

I need one technical help . Can I use DB-624 column in water analysis on TCD . I was used INERT CAP column for this purpose but unfortunately this column is broken. Now can I use this column for water analysis. I am separating water from one of our organic solvent. I separated it also on DB-624 I just want to know that if I am usnig this column (DB-624) any negative impact will arise with this cyano phase?
Best regards

You can use about any GC column in a TCD. The question is: will the column separate your analytes? Do not expect to swap one type of column for another and to use the same parameters to get similar results.

Do not run the column above the stated maximum temperature. And, be sure to adjust the carrier flow to account for any changes in dimensions.

If you are asking if a DB-624 column can be used for aqueous injections, I'd first ask the supplier.

But my answer would be yes:

(2) The older USP assays for DEG and EG (in glycerin monograph) did just that for a few years, then I believe USP switched to methanol as solvent. But we did use the aqueous solvents for that as well for a few years.

(1) USP <611> uses a 624 column for ethanol assay from aqueous solution, and we use that as well.
I also used initially inertcap column for vaolatile amine to separate the water and the one of our organic solvent. Both are seperate as well but after 3-4 months our column is break form several sites. Now I used DB-624 , again I found good separation I feared that same problem is not come agian.
Please suggest

praveenpaliwal,

"Trace" amounts of water or direct injections of water. If the former, the DB-624 should give you a long service life since it is used for Volatiles analysis which always transfers water from the purge-and-trap to the column. If the latter, I am unsure because I have not done large numbers of injections of high levels of water. It did work without difficulty for a limited number of injections...

We've used 0.5ul water injections routinely, system suitability, multiple injections per sample, multiple samples (not just water and ethanol, either), etc. This is several times a week, for over two years now.

Our back-up column is still in the drawer, in its box.
