Refractive index data for ethanol-water

Discussions about HPLC, CE, TLC, SFC, and other "liquid phase" separation techniques.

Hello All:

I have developed a calibration curve with varying ethanol concentration solutions and determined the refractive index for each concentration using
ABBE MARK II refractometer.
I am in need for refractive index data for ethanol-water mixture from some standard reference material so that I can compare my values with the standards ( to observe the error).
Probably this may not be a right forum, but still I was hoping to get some advice from senior chemists here who may have some suggestions on this regard.
I have already looked into: Perry's chemical engineering handbook, Lange's hand book, CRC hand book .

Please help if you have any information to get standard refractive index values for ethanol-water mixtures.

Thanks in advance

This is from D'Ans-Lax, 2nd edition. Values are for 15°C (2nd column) and 25°C (3rd column) respectively, composition is by% weight.

Dear KHW,
Thank you for the valuable response.
It would be of immense help if you could provide more information on the text book from which you got these values..
I checked with our librarian, she said D-Ans-lax could be the author...
If you can please post the title of the book, ISBN etc it would be very useful..
Thanks for the information,

KHW,
I also found out that the book you suggested is in German. So,can you please suggest any other book/source that is in English with the refractive index data for ethanol-water system...or is there an english translation to this book...
Thanks for the response,
Regards

Don't be concerned! The D'Ans-Lax is as standard a book in Germany as Perry's or Lange's is to you.

Hello All:

Since I really need to get an entire data range of the refractive index values for ethanol water, it may be required for me to go through the reference material.

Can Any one please help and suggest information in which i can find these data?

thanks

I would very much doubt that there are any recent table works listing these data. I found the values I have given in the 2nd edition of D'Ans-Lax which is from the 1940ies. I did not check the latest edition. Your concern that it is in German is not very critical, you just have to translate the table name and the headers. Maybe Beilstein can give you a reference to the original literature, I would start searching in the oldest entries for ethanol. This may become lengthy, I am afraid.

One of the best references for thermodynamic data such as this is the "Intenational Critical Tables" published for the National Research Council by McGraw-Hill in 1928. Unfortunately there has never been an update, but the information is still good. Most technical libraries should have the set of about ten volumes.
