Sensitivity measurement based on GC peak

Discussions about GC and other "gas phase" separation techniques.

Is there an equation that relates sensitivity with the properties of the GC peak e.g. peak width or peak height?

Don't think it's is a defined chromatographic parameter, but if you think of sensitivity in terms of signal-to-noise (and hence limit of detection) then you could differentiate methods by either;

1. LOD = 3 x (noise)pp

here, LOD is initially determined as a function of peak height. In the alternative case we have a function of peak area:

2. LOD = 3.3 x sd / S

where,
(noise)pp = measured peak-to-peak noise in the baseline
sd = std dev of regression line
S = slope of regression line in calibration curve

In regulatory terms the first is just as acceptable, however you should go on to demonstrate your calculated value is suitable whichever you use.
