Hi all,

I've read about a kind of particles in LC called monolithic. Could any one explain what it is and the advantages of that kind of columns.

Thanks.

Monoliths

Main different is in their internal structure. While packed columns are filled with spherical particles, monolithic column is filled with one piece of porous material - monolith.

There are two kinds of monoliths: inorganic silica based (Merck) and organic polymers monoliths (different types of monomers and crosslinker - methacrylates, styrene-divinylbenzene, acrylates, ..).

Main advantages of the organic polymers monoliths is their simple preparation and very easy and extensive surface modification (reactive monomers, chemical modification, grafting). On the other hand, majority of them is still developed in the research labs.

If you like I can provide you with more literature, depends on your requirements.
