Basic questions from students; resources for projects and reports.

Hi! My son is doing a science fair project using the paper and plate(homemade using cornstarch soln) methods to separate flower pigments. What would be the best solvent solution that could be used for both methods. Also, which would be the best to make the pigment soln. and give the best separation ... isopropyl alcohol or acetone? What would be an "exciting" problem/hypothesis to use for this project.
Thanks for all your help!
