Right now I run an Agilent 5972A MSD with a 6890 GC using Windows 95 and G1701AA Version A.02.00 software. If possible, I would like to move to a computer with a more-modern version of Windows.

I saw on the Agilent page where G1701DA is supported by Windows 2000 and/or WinXP, but I dont know if that software version is compatible with my 5972A MSD. Does anyone know?

I believe that "if" that is possible, a newer computer would require a more-modern GPIB board such as 82341 or 82350. I do understand that 5972A has been out of factory support for several years....

This should have the info you need:

Looks like the latest support for the 5972 is on G1701CA with Win NT4 SP6a and the 82341C HPIB board

You are limited by the SmartCard (5972 has a SMII) from going to a newer version of Chemstation. You can ask your Agilent rep if you can replace the SMII with a SMIII or SMIII+, but I bet you can't in a 5972.

I was quoted almost 10,000$ (per instrument) to go from a SMII to a SMIII so I could run 1701E on my 5973s...yeah that didn't happen

I think you two have answered my question, thanks very much. My supervisor was concerned what we could do to avoid using such old computerization, but doesn't want us to purchase a newer system either to replace it. I'll recommend to my boss to stay with Win95 for it, and we can set up a different vintage Win95 unit should the first computer die.
