CAM Column for Glycerol

Discussions about GC and other "gas phase" separation techniques.

Does anyone know is it possible to use GC-FID CAM column to detect glycerol??

If it is possible, can you tell me what's the setting on the GC?? I'm using Aglient 7890A, thanks for your help!!

My guess would be another phase might work better.

Glycerol is too acidic for the column you are using.

Perhaps, a FFAP column might work better, or an ordinary Wax column.

best wishes,

Thanks Rodney, I know I should pick a Wax column but just hoping it works~~~ but really appreciated

The "624" columns (e.g. Rtx-624) detailed in the USP monograph (for impurities in glycerin) give a decent peak shape for underivatized glycerin.

At my work we've assayed for glycerin levels in consumer products and raw materials for decades by GC on non-polar capillaries after trimethylsilyl derivatization.

Sorry, for newbies like me, could someone explain what a CAM column is? Just curious.

Best regards.

A CAM column is a carbowax phase column with the surface/phase deactivated to amines. It has a more basic character than a ordinary Carbowax (PEG) phase like the FFAP phase has a more acidic character than the Carbowax phase, although it too is based on Carbowax.
