Acetone to replace Acetonitrile for LC-MS application

Dear all,

Does anyone have practical experience of using HPLC acetone in place of acetonitrile for LC-MS application? Is there any pros and cons? Thanks.

In many cases that we tried, it did not work as well as we had hoped (ion suppression). However, I need to find out if anybody did additional homework to understand why it did not work.

Uwe, was it the sensitivity or separation problem? Or was it analyte specific? I really like to know what you have been attempting. It seems that the topic of acetonitrile shortage may be so overwhelming or the problem's already been solved that no one here is interested in trying other ACN substitutes. This week I try to get the price quote of HPLC grade acetone and acetonitrile, they are still a three to five fold price difference.

It was a sensitivity problem specific to groups of analytes, not a separation problem.
