Analytical method-ethanol

Discussions about GC and other "gas phase" separation techniques.

Hello all:

I want to know if ethanol can be analyzed in any other technique other than by GC.
I have looked at density method but I have not been very successful in developing a method.
Any advice is appreciated,

Thanks in advance,

Ridge

Ridge,

Maybe the wrong forum to discuss non-chromatographic techniques, but...

One possibility is NIR.

This is used in the beverage and pharmaceutical industry for analysis of the ethanol content of products such as beer, wine and mouthwash.

NIR instrument vendors even have instruments specifically designed for this purpose.

In our (pharmaceutical) lab, we use GC for the ethanol in mouthwash analysis. We planned to switch to NIR for the analysis as others in the industry use it, but we didn't get very far before the project was changed and transferred to another site. However, we know it has been done and the sample prep and analysis time is greatly simplified and reduced.

Regards,
Dan

May be you can analyse it by refractometry.

The real question: ethanol in what matrix?

YSI makes an analyzer than uses immobilized enzymes to quantify ethanol and other compounds.
