Fingerprint Chromatography;could be trusted or not?

Discussions about HPLC, CE, TLC, SFC, and other "liquid phase" separation techniques.

Hi,gus;
Any ideas about "Fingerprint Chromatography" for nature products or drug? Advantages or disadvantages,useful and helpful,any chance for acceptable as office methods...
Best regards!

Whilst having some limited utility as a research tool, it's very unlikely to become an official analytical method for critical confirmations of natural products - mainly because adulteration would be really easy.

There is a niche where it may help classify various natural products ( eg flavonoid profiles - I think the USDA has such a database ), but as a quality control technique it's probably going to be restricted to simple screening with support from other techniques.

I will start a research for my doctor degree.And I chose Fingerprint Chromatography as the theme of my doctoral dissertation.I want to know if there is something I can do.So, any suggestion will be appreciated.

Fingerprint Chromatography can be used (and is used along with other techniques) in the in the area of counterfit drug analysis. The chromatographic profiles (impurities mostly) of drug substances and drug formulations from a legit producer are quite consistant and quite different from those made illegally. As for natural products, I dont think so. Variations from growing season, locations, variety and so on make this very difficult. I did a study many years ago, same crop, multiple locations. There were significant differences in the chromatographic profile from identical varieties grown several kilometers apart. I also looked at the same crop, different cultivars and the differences were quite significant. After having said that, it is quite easy to tell 2 different plant types apart from a chromatographic profile.

Hi,AA;
Did you publish your research? I will be very appreciated if you can email your articles to me.(doctorzlb@163.com)
Whatever, thank you for your responses.
Best regards!

So,if we complete method with quantitative function, will it be helpful?
I have heard rumors that the FDA and/or the USDA were considering mandating fingerprinting of foodstuffs - can anyone confirm or refute or point me to a government news source addressing this issue? I have checked the FDA site and have not seen anything.

Thanks
Cheers -
Elizabeth

So, I believe, more and more, it will be an offical method one day.
