Ridge,
Maybe the wrong forum to discuss non-chromatographic techniques, but...
One possibility is NIR.
This is used in the beverage and pharmaceutical industry for analysis of the ethanol content of products such as beer, wine and mouthwash.
NIR instrument vendors even have instruments specifically designed for this purpose.
In our (pharmaceutical) lab, we use GC for the ethanol in mouthwash analysis. We planned to switch to NIR for the analysis as others in the industry use it, but we didn't get very far before the project was changed and transferred to another site. However, we know it has been done and the sample prep and analysis time is greatly simplified and reduced.
Regards,
Dan
