Advice on GC-MS system (Finnigan-Mat Mangnum ion trap)

I am considering buying a used GC-MS system.

Varian 3400 GC with a Finnigan-MAT Magnum quadrupole iontrap MS.

I plan to use it for analyzing plant natural products (essential oils, secondary metabolites, small molecules, etc.)
I know it is an old model. Is it a worthwhile system, considering my small budget?
Thank you for your help.

I would start first by considering any service issues: how well does Varian and Thermo cover your area. If you support instrument service yourself (i.e., internalized instrument service) do you have more expertise with one vendor over the other.

I'll let others comment on the specific systems, but I am always concerned first with being able to keep a system functional.

Neither the Varian 3400 nor the Magnum Ion Trap are within the servicability lifetime with their manufacturers and parts for either will not be available new. Are you buying privately or from a re-seller ? This kit is old, at least 10 years, at the right price it could be a bargain but if it breaks expect to throw it away rather than fix it unless you have a local third party repair/maintenance support.
