This brings back memories - and it's been a while ago, so it may have been a 5972 rather than a 5973 that backstreamed on us. We pulled the analyzer section, removed the source and detector and washed the quads down by pouring methylene chloride through them. We replaced the detector and cleaned the source. The instrument showed a high background for methylene chloride for a few days, but it recovered and ran quite well after that. Just be careful, the 5972 had machined quad rods. The 5973 has the metal film on quartz - and it may not take much abuse. But if it is oil coated, there may not be much to lose...
Good luck.
