Dear all,

regards.I am a research scholar from IIT, India and presently helping out my boss in procuring a GC MS/MS for plant terpenoid(C15 H24 module molecules ) /phenolic (whole range of those ) analysis as well as metabolomics analysis.
After screening for costs and features, we have finally landed inot 2 GC MSMSM giants Thermo and Varian, and is presently difficult to choose from.Kindly suggest me .The features are as follows .

1. ITQ 1100TM Ion-Trap Mass Spectrometer system includes EI Source, 250 L/sec Turbo-Molecular pump, MSn, Computer and Software-X-CALIBUR (230V),interface temperature has a maximum of 350 °C ,- Optimally designed to eliminate ion-molecule reaction, EI and optional CI source with exchangeable ion volumes, maximizing performance in EI, positive ion CI, and negative ion CI, Electron beam collimating magnets provide highest ionization efficiency, heating from 125 °C to 300 °C for stable operation and superior chromatographic integrity, Electron energy adjustable between 0 and 130 eV and emission current upto 850 µA ,Run time diagnostics,Hot splitless injection of 1 pg octafluoronaphthalene (OFN) in isooctane produces a signal to noise of 100:1 for m/z 272 in full scan., MS (n ≤ 5) modes of mass analysis,Unit mass resolution throughout the mass range of 10 – 1100 amu, Scan rate of 5,555 amu/sec,TR-5 MS 30 meters X 0.25 mm ID fused silica capillary column Film thickness 0.25 micron, NIST 05 library (190,825 spectra) ,

2. GC-MS Model 4000, Includes CP-3800 GC,Automatic EI/CI switch: available, Mass Range: 10-1000 Da, Scan Speed: 5000/10000 u/S
Mass resolution: unit Mass, Vacum pump: Turbo molecular pump with 280L/sec speed , PC/Printer, power fail kit and communication kit,NIST Library, 2002, 1177 Split/Splitless injector , CP624 Column , 60Mx 0.32 x 1.8um,Internal CI, External . CI, External EI,Electron Energy: -50eV
Emission Current: Dual filament both in EI/CI,Mult-tasking Operational System, Multiple Method (upto 8) with protected memory, Central control of up to 7 headed zones( 6 plus column oven), -99 to 450 dg C, temp. programming column Oven (up to 7 ramps per methods.) Time-programmable injectors (up to 3) with Electronic flow/pneumatic controls. On/Off gas controls; up to 3 data channels. Ethernet communications interface with TCP/IP protocols for workstation control.

Kindly suggest me which one to opt for.We are not concenred about the cost this time as we look for precision, reproducibility, endurance, performance and results rather than any thing else.
With the hope that I would be suggested soon.Thanking you in anticipation, I remain
Yours truly

Since Ion Trap MS systems are not being used for quantitation and hence you need not look in to ITQ system.

Is GC-MS Model : 4000 from which manufacturer?. Is it a Io Trap or Triple Quad?.

Varian is a very old analytical instrument manufacturer and thier systems are very good. Recently they have upgraded thier old system ( new system Model : 320 GC-MS/MS ) and even S/N ratio is on par or above with other manufacturers.

When you are working on terpenoid and metabolomics analysis, I suggest you to look for Triple Quad systems than Ion Trap systems.

The major worry with the two manufacturers which you short listed is their capabilities to give you effective after sales support. Being a student in educational insititute its your responsiblity to select a vendor who can extend a decent after sales support to academia so that the system is not going to a white elephant for want of service.

Why dont you call both Waters & Agilent to get quotes for thier Triple Quad GC-MS. I am confident they both are having slightly upper hand when after sales support is concerned.

Hope I could able to give some suggestion. You are welcome for any querries

I would also suggest looking into Waters and Agilent. Sorry I can't be more help with the systems that you currently have under consideration.

Varian and Thermo not well supported in India ? The request is about GC-MS there is no request for GC-MS-MS. Both listed suppliers make GC-MS/MS Triple quads too. I assume there is a reason that you are not considering Single Quads as these are normally the most robust ?
My personal choice as an ex salesman for Thermo would be the Thermo product but you really need to see both yourself to find out which one is best. I hope some actual users come along too to give a real answer to your question about the named systems.

You can use Triple Quad GC MS system for your work. But I am afraid whether you can able to use the QQQ system for your metabolomics analysis.

I suggest you to buy GC-ToF from waters as it is a good system for metabolomics analysis.
