Detection of N2O and C3H6 on OV-1 Column

Hi

I have a Agilent 3000 micro GC with OV-1 and Molecular Sieve 5A columns. Is it possible to detect and separate N2O and C3H6 on OV-1 column?

neelambj,

The Nist site shows a retention index for that at 186 on an SPB-1 which means between methane and ethane (just before ethane.) If I am not mistaken, OV-1 would be very similar retention.

Please advise if this is the case. Also, what levels are you looking for?

Best regards.

Hi

Thanks a lot for the reply. Methane will get detected on MS-5A. However this is not my concern at the moment. Iwant to detect propylene (2000 ppm and less, maybe upto 100 ppm) and N2O (100 ppm and above). Is it possible to detect these two gases on this particular column, and if yes is there separation possible.

Hi...

all i know ov-1 can detect propylene or propane (i think) but not at ms5a column, and for N2O could be detected by MS5A.

correct me if im wrong, thanks

Hi

You are right. Propylene will get detected on OV-1, but not propane. Ideally OV-1 should be used for detection of higher hydrocarbons. For C1-C3 hydrocarbons porapaq column is a better option. And yes, N2O can be separated and detected on a MS-5A.
