I am facing a problem with analyzing acetaminophen in water. I used Agilent Bond Elut Plexa for SPE extraction following EPA1694. However, the recovery for the spike is almost 0% while surrogate recovery (labelled acetaminophen) is only 25%.

May I know is it cause of the incorrect cartridge used?

Or can anyone give suggestions of the cartridges which I could use?

Thank you...

Well, I would suggest using the cartridge specified in the method (Hydrophilic-Lipophilic-Balance (HLB) 60 mg, Waters Oasis, 20cc/1 g LP, 60 μm) and see if you see proper recovery. I don't enough about the Agilent Bond Elut Plexa to say whether or not it is equivalent but if you are not getting adequate recovery that would be a good first step.

Also make sure you are doing the extraction at the correct pH, there is a base and an acid extraction procedure and you need the correct one to get good recovery.
