We have Agilent 6890 GC and Thermo Surveyor HPLC in our lab.We intend to purchase HPLC system.Waters dealer in our country mentioned that they can make Multi-Vendor control. It means that they can control Agilent GC and Thermo HPLC with EMPOWER Software.

Has anyone experienced Waters EMPOWER software ?If we purchase waters , can we come face to face with troubles?

Empower software is an extremly powerful CDS with many outstanding features. It does control the 6890 but does not, and probably never will, control any Thermo gear.

Don't know about control, it depends on interface available.
But you can use Empower to record and process data from any instrument. We have Empower system, controlling several Alliances and processing data from old Gilson HPLC instruments.

It is my understanding the EZChrom elite from Scientific software will control Surveyor as well Agilent GC's such as 6890

The Empower software will control the Agilent 6890 (at specific firmwares), the Agilent 1100 (Again at specific firmwares and not the flourescence detector). As for any other vendors hardware Empower does not control except as mentioned previously through an analog to digital convertor (SAT/IN) box to collect detector data. There is however a toolkit option that allows customers or vendors to program control for their equipment into Empower, but as I recall it is pricey for a customer to purchase.

Some questions you may want to ask any CDS vendor are, is the control bidirectional, an do they controll all components such detectors, pumps, ovens etc. My biased opinion you should look at Chromeleon CDS by Dionex.

alwasy ask for a demo

I always ask for an in-house demo of their control software to prove that it works for the instruments. Sometimes the claims are greater than actual.

If the sales-rep (tech-rep) cannot make it work, it will be difficult. The empower software is very powerful but also very complex. Run some of your present methods using the software and ensure that the results are comparable. The integration engine is slightly different for all software, so you don't want to find out that a method starts to fail due to integration differences.
