Use pulse S/SP when you just want to reduce the dwell time of the sample in liner. So use it when samples are labile and/or prone to adsoption etc..

Pulsed Split/Splitless works by putting a large increase in flow through the inlet when you do your inject to help force the vaporized sample into the column. It's really useful when you have some very late eluding compounds that appear to have poor peak shape and sensitivity, heavier compounds that might otherwise sit around in the inlet and get swept away when you purge. The problem with pulsed is very early eluding compounds can be pushed through even faster and smear more into the solved peak and in a lot of cases it simply won't have much effect at all.

Pulsed split/splitless are also used to try to increase the amount of material getting onto the column and quickly returning to the normal chromatographic conditions you might want to operate under. Having said that, I have not had very good luck with this technique and in fact just recently ditched an effort in that regard.
