Hi,

I'm new to GCs as this project was sort of left in my hands even though I have no experience with this GC.

I was wondering if anyone could pass on any tips on measuring gas samples (air+1-propanethiol) using a capillary column, or if anyone is familiar with 1-propanethiol or has any good references to understanding the properties of 1-propanethiol for better use with the GC.

Here is some information:

The column we are using is (according to the box):

Varian GC Capillary Column
wcot fused silica
30mx0.32mm
ID coating: CP-SIL 5CB for sulfur
df=4.0uL
Catalogue no. CP7529
(from the website: 30 m x 0.32 mm CP-Select CB for sulfur, df = 4.0 µm)

T max ISO: 300
T min: -60
T max prog: 325

Our method was previously set up. From what I can gather it is as follows:
Level 1: 10C/min to 120C
Level 2: 30C/min to 250C
Hold for 3 minutes
Total run time: 13.83 minutes

I have been seeing peaks at about 3.78 minutes.


Any help would be great, please let me know if i need to give more information.

The NIST web page says this compound has a retention index in the 600's on a thin film DB-5 column running between 80 and 120 C. It also has an ionization potential of about 9.2 making it a good candidate for PID or AID. Should have pretty good sensitivity for this via FID considering the number of carbon hydrogen bonds.

No flow conditions are given but if you can get your hands on a good hydrocarbon range mix that should give you a good idea where it will elute on your system. I should think your CP Sil column is a good alternative.
