EN 1410 Determination of Total FAME

Greetings All: I'm trying to get a copy of this protocol. The real issue is sample prep after the base catalyzed trans-esterification reaction of the various oils we will be using and subsequent analysis by GC. The actual GC methodology is available from any column manufacturer but I'm not really sure I want to spend the money to find out it doesn't have the required info. If anyone has a copy and could confirm this that would be adequate.

Any help would be appreciated.

Unfortunately I cannot supply you with a copy of the method as it is copyrighted and will have to be purchased. I believe you can get a copy through http://webstore.ansi.org/

However, I can tell you that the method EN 14103:2003 does include the GC operating parameters in Annex A at the end of the method. Column, flows, and temperatures are all specified. I hope this helps!

Brice: Greetings. thank you for the reply, but what I really wanted to know was whether there is any info on the sample prep (in my case I don't want to put a sample on a GC column that may contain traces of KOH and other things... ) I'm surmising that you have a copy and if you could indicate whether this is info is available in the procedure that would be enough for me to buy it.

No, the above mentioned method does not contain any sample prep procedure so it won't help you there.

I've run many thousands of samples on a single DBWAX column using a KOH procedure and have never noticed any out of the ordinary damage to the column.

I would recommend centrifuging your sample at a moderate speed for two minutes prior to putting it into your vial to separate the aqueous layer from the hexane or whatever you're using.

You can also add some saturated sodium chloride solution to break any emulsions that may have formed and then centrifuge. Alternatively, you can also just let it sit on the bench for a while and it will usually separate out fine also.

I use a cyanopropylsilicone phase for fatty acid methyl esters, such as SP-2330.
