Dear Tom,

Regarding your question I (personally) have one good recommendation for an up-to-date GC book:

Modern Practice of Gas Chromatography 4th edition, by Robert L. Grob and Eugene F. Barry, John Wiley & Sons, 2004

from the same authors I also recommend the book:
Columns for Gas Chromatography-Performance and Selection, John Wiley & Sons, 2007
