Hi,

I should use Agilent Zorbax XDB-CN column for NP-HPLC sepn. But I couldn't find it. What I found is Agilent Zorbax SB-CN column. Can I use this column? Thanks.

The column you indicate is still commercially available... or do you mean that is not available in your laboratory?

Thanks, Kostas. Yes, it is not available in my laboratory. I'd like to know what difference between Agilent XDB-CN and Agilent SB-CN. Can I use SB-CN column to get the same good result as I used XDB-CN column :-)?

I would guess that selectivity and plate counts would be different. SB is a pretty garden-variety particle/coating configuration while XBD is not.
Thanks,
DR

I believe the underlying silica is the same, but the XDB is end-capped, while the SB uses isopropyl side chains on the bonding silanes instead of the more usual methyl groups.

I just looked in the PQRI column selectivity database on the USP web site:
http://www.usp.org/USPNF/columnsDB.html (the PQRI database is the second one on the page). It contains both columns, but they are not listed among the 10 most similar each other.

These column bondings (XDB vs.SB) are advertised to be providing alternative selectivities one from another so I wouldn't expect identical results. But of course both columns might provide separation between your compounds of interest...

Here are some more info about the different Agilent bonded phases:
