Gas saver?

Discussions about GC and other "gas phase" separation techniques.

I go through my compressed air quicker than my other gases, is there a way to save gas without compromising my chromatography? The instruments are set up at 400ml/min for Air flow.

Are you using bottled air for your FID?

Oh MY !

Most places have a dedicated air pump with scrubbers to remove hydrocarbons and any organic comtamination from the air.

Atmospheric air is processed to be clean for use with an FID.

I cannot imagine the expense of using bottled air, nor do I ever want to.

You should really contact your gas supplier or one of the many chromatography businesses about obtaining another solution to your air requirements. (I work for such a company)

best wishes,

Rod

nabearup,

Your FID will need the 400 ml of air to run properly. The only other way to conserve air is to turn you FID's off when they are not in use and turn off the gas supplies to the detector. You can leave the detector hot with carrier and make-up gas an then just turn on the FID when you need it.

Best regards.
