Hiya

I am a mature student in the UK studying a Biology degree and am having some problems with understanding the basics of flame ionisation and electron capture detection. I understand that the first is used for a broad specificity of molecules and results in an increase in current and I believe that the latter is used for detection of chlorine and fluorine based molecules and results in a decrease in current but I cannot get to grips with how it all works. Any easy to understand explanations would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Many thanks Zokitano.

I have had a look through the articles and hope that I have grasped the basic principle although I still have 'issues' regarding the flame ionisation detector. Hopefully the little bit I have understood will be enough for what I need.

Thanks again :)
