This morning plenty of oil is found on the pan. does this indicate pump leaking?

Unless it was recently filled with too much then yes.

Is the level lower than normal?

You can mark the level with tape or a marker and then observe and see if it drops more, just don't let it go below the lower limit.

You can also clean the pan and place paper towels under the pump and see where the drops fall more easily to help find where the pump is leaking.

I've found that some pumps do leak a little. If more than a few mls I would consider swapping it out.
