5890 Series II Makeup Gas Flow Control

It seems that the valve that controls the flow of the makeup gas to my FID on the Series II is just a needle valve. The original finally failed (no flow control at all). May I merely remove the connections for that needle valve (clip the 1/16" tubing) and install my own manual needle valve to control the flow o the makeup gas? Anyone else done it before?

The on-off valves for the H2 and air are ok. Just no response from the makeup gas flow controller. Other than this, the instrument still works well after all of these years.

As long as you can control the flow it doesn't matter how it is done, well within reason since you don't want to use a valve with contaminated rubber o-rings and such.
