problem to register on forum

Hi,
One of my friend is trying to register on the forum,but he is unable to register.
VIP code: *
The VIPcode is the value of pi to five decimal places! .
Can any one let me know whats the value to enter in this field,so that we can be registered,I remember that i did not see this field during my registration.

Pi being one of the most common and important scientific numbers in the world, i fail to see the problem.

The "VIP code" was added to the registration form last year in order to defeat "spam bot" programs that would automatically register and then post porno links on the Forum. So far, it requires a human to parse the instructions.

I will give a hint: the value of pi to two decimal places is 3.14

You should be able to look up the value to five decimal places.

Off topic somewhat, but I can't get the "Log me on automatically each visit:" to work from my home computer, any ideas why, or how to fix?

Someone figured this out and mentioned it a while back. Enter the forum directly (at: http://www.sepsci.com/chromforum/) and not via the LCResources website. That worked for me.

I entered the value of PI as 3.14285(specified to enter upto 5 decimal places),still it mentioning as invalid number.

That's your problem: 3.14285 is not the correct value of pi!

Do a Google search on the keyword "pi".

That doesn't work for me. A while ago, I couldn't even log in there, had to go to the bottom area of the page ! I guess my computer is dumb !!!

Maybe your security settings are too high? I might be wrong but probably you are remembered in this site through cookies and if you have a program that deletes all of them without any discrimination then you won''t be able to have the appropriate cookie for the site to remember you?

Kostas - I don't understand essentially anything you stated, way over my head. My company apparently decides the level of security. Cookies sound good - mmm !!!!

CPG, I did have to set my Norton Utilites software to NOT delete my cookies for this site. I have to look it up to remember how. If you have Norton let me know via my email and I'll look up the info/insturctions on Norton and get back to you.

Also if you have internet explorer go to "tools", select "internet options" and then select the tab "privacy". There is a slider there that can go to low/medium/high/block all cookies security setting. I have mine set up to medium, if yours is up to "block all cookies", then you want maybe to decrease it to something like medium... After that you should be able to stay logged in the chromatography forum...

Kostas - I have Internet Explorer; I checked mine, and it's already set to "Low" on that slider.

Right, sorry, we did a good hijack of topic here, but maybe an important one. So I currently have this issue both at home and at work. I'd bet I spend 1.5 hours per week at work just entering in log-ons and passwords. Even for my direct company related stuff, I must have ten different log-ins and passwords; some must be changed regularly, some have restrictions, others are fine forever. There's no way to align or consolidate them either...I have a spreadsheet with them all...of course, that's also password protected....

I always try to keep the same password for all the work applications. When one application requires a new password to be selected, then I change them all at the same time.

It may not be prudent to have the same password for all the different applications. But there is still an easy way to do it.

Keep the same "base" part for all passwords and add 2 or 3 characters specific to the appplication. The "base" should be something easy for you to remember or type.

Example: For your base, type 3 characters in a row or diagonal on the keyboard and then hold the shift key and type 3 more characters in a row or diagonal. So your "base" can be: 1qa@WS
Just look at the keyboard to see that these characters are in a diagonal on the left hand side. Now add the characters specific to the application, say 'cf' for this Chromatography Forum. So your password here is: 1qa@WScf

That gives you an easy to use password that has the best security elements: upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols.

Two things to note:
(1) Make sure the application can use the characters that you choose and can use that amount of characters. Some programs limit you to 6 or 8 characters and they may not allow you to use symbols.
(2) Don't write down your password. FDA auditors are known to lift a keyboard to find the little sticky notes that people put under there with their passwords on them (and they often find them!).
