Two compounds are to be separated by chromatography. The capacity factors (k' values) are known to be 4.3 and 5.4 respectively. The column is 2.0 metres long and has the following Van Deemter coefficients under the specified operating conditions:

A = 0.0056 cm B = 0.047 cm-2 s-1 C = 0.0060 sec.

(a) Calculate the optimum flow rate, number of theoretical plates and ratio of retention time to peak width.

(b) Calculate the resolution of the two peaks. Hint: find elution time of non-retained substance then use capacity factors to find retention times of each retained component

I have calculated U to be2.8, N to be 5104 and tr/w to be 17.86

Could anyone help me in finding the resolution of the two peaks and explain how its done.

thankyou very much mark

Thanks,
DR
